In 1946 a partnership was formed between Mr. Frederick Cooper and Mr. Anthony Cassar who had been the agent for the London Assurance (Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group PLC) since 1937.
In 1947 Cassar & Cooper formed British Air Services (B.A.S. Ltd ). This company was the pioneer of aviation in Malta and obtained a licence in the name of Air Malta with scheduled and chartered flights to be Tripoli, Benghazi, Cairo, Catania, Palermo and Rome. Air Malta was eventually liquidated and the licence passed to Malta Airways. This company and B.A.S. Ltd jointly operated aircraft handling services at Malta International Airport under the names of Malta Aviation Services until this was nationalised in 1973. As a result Cassar & Cooper remains a minority shareholder in the present Air Malta.
